Walking Yorkshire - Ilkley Moor, Chelker

The bridge over the River Wharfe at the 4th tee, Ilkley Golf Club.

The 11th Hole, Ilkley Golf Club. The course looks beautiful under its blanket of snow, but its killing my trade.

I saw this sign on a footpath close to Nesfield. What's going on here then ? Did Nidderdale buy a job of signs and then sell them off cheap to the other Dales, we're in Wharfedale.

Chelker Reservoir above Addingham is frozen over (click the Chelker tab below to see a post of the reservoir in Summer). I should perhaps have stopped the walk here and gently pottered back home, but after a filling lunch of fish and erks in 'Dingham I felt temporarily full of go again and so foolishly went straight up Addingham Moorside. By the top my legs were like lead and I had a niggling strain at the top of my left thigh, the walk home along the top was very slow indeed.

Panorama Reservoir isn't frozen over, and it is much smaller than Chelker.

  1. Lovely views, as always, but especially lovely with a blanket of white.

As for the lack of trade, you need to introduce the locals to the fine Canadian tradition of snow golf. It's great fun, especially when played in a couple of feet of snow. It's not for the serious golfer, though, I suppose, as one spends more time falling about laughing than actually following the rules of golf.
