On This Day....

...in 1964 Pope Paul VI became the first Pope in 150 years to travel outside Italy when he visited Israel where he met Athenagoras I, the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, this was the first meeting in over 500 years between the leaders of the Roman Catholic and Russian Orthodox churches.

It seems strange now to think that that the Papacy went through such a long period without visiting other Catholic countries, in the modern era globetrotting Popes are accepted as the norm.
