Guns 'n Roses Chinese Democracy Gets Release Date, Snore
Back we go, back into the mists of dawn, back to the dawn of rock, or back a decade at least when GnR last put out any original music.
For those rock kids that have never heard of Guns 'n Roses, they used to be quite big. No wait, they were huge, their album Appetite For Destruction sold by the millions, over 28 million copies sold worldwide, that's a lot of vinyl. GnR had as much interested in drugs as they did in music, they are right up ther with the Ozzy Osbournes / Motley Crues / Aerosmiths of the drug taking rock heirachy.
That said, they managed a couple of ep's and two hugely overblown albums Use Your Illusion 1+2 which contained about a single album's worth of decent songs, but about six years after the band had hit the rock scene they beagn to dissolve. Band members were fired, others left, and soon Axl Rose was all on his own with just the legal rights to the band's name for company.
The various other members of GnR have had some success (well, Slash mostly) with Snakepit, Velvet Revolver (Slash didn't learn first time around about dysfunctional singers obviously) and others.
Axl has spent the last decade making Chinese Democracy, which has become an industry byword for "it'll never happen", hiring and firing people with great regularity, booking and cancelling shows and getting into fights in nightclubs.
And he's got a really shit haircut.
Who is in GnR now then ? Well if I told you that he fired a guitarist called Buckethead and replaced him with one called Bumblefoot would it give a clue to Axl's mental state ? What made him think that replacing the uber cool Slash with a man who wears a Kentucky Fried Chicken bucket on his head was a good idea ? GnR, whoever they are, are the Axl Rose Ego Support Band and nothing else, Axl, Slash, Izzy, Duff, Adler, that was the band. Perhaps with half a band's original line up you can call them the same thing, but this incarnation is not GnR no matter what a legal document may claim.
So now the fabled Chinese Democracy album is due to be relased on the 24th of November, but who cares ? GnR were the band of the moment when they released AFD, it was a awesome album packed ful of rock songs that sound vibrant, aggressive and fresh today, by Illusion they had become a bloated Spinal Tap parody of themselves, still able to pull off the occasional blinder but too addled to cut out the rubbish. Another ten years on and does anyone really care what GnR have become, do Axl and the band name still have enough pulling power after all this time, and the main question for intrigued rock fans...are you going to line Axl's pockets with more of your hard earned cash, or just log onto Limewire/Soulseek/Bittorrent ?
